Hi everyone,

I recently bought a nice Claude butler with 531 frame. I had stuck it in the car last weekend (rear wheel off) and must have bent the hanger slightly. I didn't notice until when shifting down, derailleur goes into spokes, chain snaps etc. The result is a very badly bent hanger and dropout, but no cracks in the steel. My LBS took one look at it and said it can't be fixed. I just thought I would run it past people on here before I binned it :(

Looks worse every time I see it. :(

Thanks for your help

If it was just the hanger these can be pulled back into shape and you can even get a tool for this purpose....however you have damaged the drop out for the wheel as well!! It possibly can be repaired but you are going to possibly need proper workshop who can repair frame, it might need slight heat then process to make metal go hard again...followed by paint.
Think you are gonna have to search for frame builders...or if you can find old school car body shop (not just panel monkeys) they might be able to sort.
    Good Luck :?

It is a frame builder job... the dropout needs to be replaced... get a quote and see if it is worth it... consider the respray too

Ideally the dropout needs to be replaced. However the last two day I have had a frame builder in the shop and I have a bike in with exactly the problem and all he did was use a hammer and my hanger alignment tool to ease it back into Shape. It changes gear now and is quite straight. This is also what I would have done bt I didn't have too this time. %31 steel can be quite soft. Heat treated steel can be a different matter.

It is possible to do and I would give it a go but the correct way is to replace the dropout. So is this bike a beater or something special.
