I was having a discussion the other day with a friend about riding skill,
I returned to riding about a year and a half ago but he never left, in fact he's has been doing all kinds of 2 wheeled stuff for the past 20 years BMX,moto cross, enduro.
needless to say that he is a far better rider then me, i watch him chucking his bike around like a ragdoll, lifting the front and back end over logs, up and down stairs with total control, indefiniate wheelies not to mention just blowing me away around anything downhill.
Last week at cannock i was (as usual) trailing in his tyre tracks, he was riding an old giant boulder and i was riding a 2 year old nerve xc9, both borrowed as we'd both had our bike stollen the week before, clearly my better bike was no match for his 20yrs of riding, his explaination for his speed and control is experience and practice,
and of course it dawned on me that his bike riding is in fact my guitar playing...
thats thing i spent last 20 years doing, and me trying to keep up with him would be the equivolent of him buying him a £5000 guitar and doing a gig.
I could be playing £50 bag of shite and would always make it sound good he would always struggle, the things that are second nature to me would just totaly mistify him..Yes im going on and on i know...
just wondered if any of you guys have had experience with other hobbies and how similar they really are, even in terms of money spend,,,it seems its 90% skill 10% kit and now he's bought an anthem x2,, im f##ked now aren't I  ?

Cars, I can go balls deep & do whatever no problem (I'm not a mechanic) but even engineers I know are mystified & don't have the confidence.
