£500 to spend - what should he get?

A friend of mine has just started riding swinley with us using my old specialised hardrock 2011. He wants to get his own bike now but is in the "what shall I buy" conundrum! He has up to £500 to spend.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

I did and the rock rider is currently out of stock. Is there anything else that could be recommended for £500? Thanks.
