Slicks for MTB - Schwalbe Speed Cruiser or something else

The tyres on my MTB are pretty split. It's a budget giant MTB, so would presume the current (knobbly) tyres are cheap ones anyway. Only used on roads (or occasionally gravel trails) nowadays so planning on moving to slicks or semi-slicks. Do these Schwalbe look OK? http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/TYS ... wired_tyre The bike has 26" mountainbike wheels.

It's a heavy steel frame, so not especially fussed about tyre weight. I would like something that's not going to puncture all the time, though, and will feel OK to ride :)

  • Schwalbe City Jets are ideal for what you're planning- fast rolling with good puncture protection. You can get a pair for about 22 quid. I use them on my MTB to commute 6 miles to work, 4 miles on sustrans track, 2 miles town roads. Never punctured and they offer a pretty nippy ride compared to chunky MTB tyres. Best of luck.

Thanks - these City Jets are likely to be better than the cruiser, then? http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000NNQFXU/? ... B000NNQFXU They do look good!

And then something like these for tubes... http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-essent ... es-2-pack/

I run a set of these "Vittoria Rubino Pro Slick 26x1.5" - they are light and quick but a bit more expensive. City Jets are a good commute tyre though, if a little heavier, go for slicks, you will notice the difference.

Thanks - those look nice, but will save a few £s and go for the City Jet slicks, I think, as I don't think I'd notice the extra weight (the frame is heavy, and I'm often carrying heavy laptop/books/shopping...)

    Duranos 1.1
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
  • +1 for the CityJets - I've got some on my Carerra Subway for roads and Canal Towpaths, etc. and they seem to last forever

HAD SPEED CRUISERS AND LOVED THEM THOUGHT THEY ROLLED WELL AND ONLY HAD 3 PUNCTURES IN APPROX 4500 MILES COMMUTING IN ALL WEATHERS PREFFERED THEM TO CITY JETS WHICH SEEMED TO HAVE A SHARPER PITCH AND FELT TWITCHY IN CORNERS,NOW RUNNING MARATHON PLUSES WHICH FEEL SLUGISH AGAINSTS CRUISERS

Got City Jets on now - need to get out on them more, but seem fine so far. Grip v well on the roads compared to knobbly tyres, feel fast enough, and can't say I've noticed a much bumpier ride. Thanks for the advice!

I run 1.5" Maxxis Zeniths on my hardtail. Commuting for 2 years on them and not had a puncture yet (touch wood)

Run them at 60-80 psi and they roll with ease.
