Giro Stage 7 - Spoiler Thread

  • I bet Wiggins is going to say he didnt think it was worth risking a crash on those descents. Which will be a fair point from a family man who has won everything.
    Except the Giro...

To be fair, I think he did the right thing. He clearly wasn't drilling it post crash, but then neither were any of the non-Sky riders with him on the road.

Yesterday Wiggins looked like the boss of the peloton, riding on the front in the last few K.

Today he looked done. The difference in attitude when they crashed between Wiggins and Nibali was obvious.

Loving the twists and turns of this Giro already, less than a week in. What will happen tomorrow, can Wiggo lift his head and smash the TT.

Looks to me like the entire Sky team, except Uran and Henao, have neglected classics style preparation; possibly in favour of exclusively focusing on high mountains, we'll see. Wiggo looks about as comfortable as G in a bunch.

Bizarre oversight if correct, but in keeping with the classics' squad performances.

    Woah, that's very harsh.

Exactly. Unless Wiggo was injured, which I really hope he isn't, the difference between the two was massive. I've never been a Nibbles fan particularly, but he went up in my estimation today big time. He wanted it. Wiggins...well.... I think that inneer chimp man Steve Peters will be busy tonight.

He hurt his knee. Tweet from David Walsh who joined Sky today for the rest of the Giro:

@DavidWalshST: Wiggins has just walked past with an ice pack on his right knee but looking calm. The rain just bucketed down thro' last hour

@lancearmstrong: Heard the press room at the #Giro "cheered" when Wiggins crashed on a wet descent today. If true, that is completely f'd.
I'd like to see every 1 of those journos mount up and scream down a slick/steep downhill at upwards of 50 mph. Then we'll see who's cheering

Doubt they cheered but if so yes that is wrong.

    That'll be why then

I hope it's not too serious.... but a bruised knee will not be easy to ride with. Also Wiggins has said in the past that he suffers in wet and cold conditions. Bad day for Wiggo, will be tough mentally to loose time to all his rivals.

    Tomorrow will be telling

That's an interesting point, the difference in intensity in fighting for position between Oman and a Grand Tour, with only Catalunya inbetween, must be enormous.

I think my point stands. Has he ridden anything with the kind of intensity and danger of the last few KM of a prestigious stage race? You can imagine guys who thrive on the likes of Amstel etc enjoying today.

Holy shoot, I'm with you...and LA

Neal Rogers says it was the Italian press being partisan as he's Nibali's rival. But disgraceful whoever it was. And only 24 hours after paying respect to the 2 year anniversary of WW's death too.

That explains it a bit. Hope it's nothing more than a bit of bruising. If Wiggins can get his head together and put in a good TT tomorrow, the racing should be fascinating from then on

My favourite race in the calendar is living up to expectations and still two more weeks to go. Hopefully Wiggins has some balls to race hard tomorrow and not give up. Then we will have a nice looking GC table going into week 2. Top 10 separated by 34secs is very tight.

Don't tell me that stage was good, considering that the profile invited for so much more. There was absolutely nothing to talk about before the weather (yes, the weather...) kicked in. I'm not a fan of riders crashing. And it was nothing but riders crashing today.

With 10 km to go the front of the peloton was flat and 3 Blanco riders were cleaning their sunglasses...

I think the parcours design has been superb so far, if taking a few chances with crashes. Stick in a huge TT for Wiggo, then give GC riders the incentive of bonus seconds in impossible territory to control the race. Also, the race book may have painted a more benign picture of the opening week. 8)
