that should be van halen vs van hager - well the band went down hill when dave left

and genesis was an empty shell ready to sell out when pete left, again no real competition

but what about the flaming lips....... the music has changed a little so it fits radio format, but they are still rocking

they were always bland, it was the funny facial hair that got them into the spotlight, religious weirdos........

what about underground bands that might go off the boil with exposure, maybe efterklang for example

or the total inverse which would be justin bieber, was very uninteresting, but with his coming of age breakdown on the horizon.....

or maybe I should just be non-constructive............

Well okay, that's your opinion. But there's no doubting that they're now grossing more $$$ and appealing more and more to housewives rather than long-haired rockers. Which - for me - constitutes being less interesting.

Fair point- I missed out the more successful

Small Faces? Not sure if they were more successful with Rod or not though.

Rainbow (Ritchie Blackmore ex Deep Purple). First two studio albums were excellent especially Rainbow Rising, one of the best rock albums ever. 3rd studio album 'Long Live Rock'n'Roll okayish then it all went mainstream on the 4th 'Down to Earth' (2 chart hits from this).... downhill all the way for me from then on, they became quite Americanised.

Blackmore now playing the lute with his missus Candice Night and has quite a cult following from what I read.

I second your opinion of Rising - Brilliant album.
If you check Blackmore's Night on Youtube, you will see Candice doing covers of Purple songs, truly bizarre!
Richie would appear to be as mad as a wet hen, from what I read but what a fecking guitarist. Rock fans can look back at 20 wasted years.

IMHO Blackmore is the greatest rock guitarist of all time. Yet never gets much in way of acknowledgement. Mind you I shouldn't think he is bothered. As he is probably playing with the fairies at the bottom of his garden.

I love the story of the Deep Purple fan who went to a Blackmores Night gig a few years ago. He had a photo of the Mk2 line up, autographed except for the maestro himself. He managed to get backstage only to be confronted by Candice Nights mother, asking what he wanted. He explained and showed the photo, only for it to be snatched from his hand and promptly torn up in front of his face.

This. First album was an ace Cheap Trick, Early Aerosmith style bar band record. Everything after that was rubbish MOR.

We are playing from the same song sheet ref Blackmore, guitar maestro.
Saw Purple in 1993 at NEC when the Come Hell or High Water vid was recorded, just before Richie flounced out. Saw them in the late 80s as well, but would gladly buy a time machine to go back to 72 Japan. Apparently the Made in Japan album was virtually laid straight down with very little engineering. A class band at the top of their game.

They did actually become a wee bit more interesting when Blaze Bailey replaced Dickinson for a while...

I think he gave himself as much acknowledgement as he actually wanted :)

    +1

The first three albums are fantastic. I could never watch them with that Midge bloke though.\

John Foxx and The Maths are supporting OMD on their current tour. That's worth the ticket price alone.
