Headset noise

I am getting a liitle click from fork area when I brake.

The bolt on the top of the headset was loose recently and I tightened it but if the stem had moved up a bit first would that mean there was a bit of play?

It seems to be from the fork/headset rather than brakes.

I might lower the stem and tighten everything up again. Is there anything I should know before doing that?
Thanks for any help

adjust the headset. stem bolts lose. top cap to remove play. tighten stem bolts.

Yep, it sounds like you just tightened the cap without loosening the stem - which does nothing. The cap is only there to push down the stem to load the bearings.

Once you've done that and tightened the stem then you could take it off.

So like Nicklouse said: loosen the stem bolts, tighten the top cap to remove the play, tighten stem again and problem should be solved.
I'm left handed, if that matters.
