Peloton Hive Mind - How do they know?
So, there's a comment on the cyclingnews live updates for giro stage 4 that "Katusha are likely to let anyone who is more than 4 minutes down skip off down the road".
In the early kms of GT stages there are sometimes a few breaks that are chased down before "the peloton decides to let them go" and the days break forms.
How does "the peloton" work this out? Are there a few riders in each team who memorise the time gaps for 200 riders the night before and then the various team captains decide to ride or not? Do the DSs have GC printouts and rely on race radio to identify who's in the break? Or does it just kind of happen?
Anyone got any insights?

I imagine the teams will have a list of the current standing in the team car, but most of the time it's pretty obvious. On stage 3 there will be a lot of guys who are close on GC, but are not actually a long term GC threat, so they'll be allowed to go in a break, but none of the team leaders or domestiques who can climb really well (i'm thinking guys like Henao) would be allowed to go up the road at this stage."I have a lovely photo of a Camargue horse but will not post it now" (Frenchfighter - July 2013)0

I should add that sometimes, well placed riders can get into breaks, but the peloton won't allow them to get too far up the road, plus their fellow breakaway riders won't want them with them as they'll know that with a highly placed or dangerous rider with them the break is doomed. Good example is when Evans got into a break in the 2009/10 Tour (can't remember which) and the other riders in the break basically told him to sit up."I have a lovely photo of a Camargue horse but will not post it now" (Frenchfighter - July 2013)0

In the days before race radio they used to tape their nearest rivals numbers on the bike and keep a sharp eye out for them. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

Except the Evil Sky, who have a massive stochastic computer back at the Death Star, microwaving exact time gaps to chips implanted in all their riders' brains.
