I recently read in the news that 2 train stations in Scotland - Bathgate and Irvine - are to get expanded car parks, courtesy of the taxpayer.

At a cost of £6,500 per space...!

But don't forget, there's a war on the motorist, and us lot are stealing road space from them as well.

  • Based on 2009 figures, VED brought in £5.6bn, and fuel duty £25.9bn. The total spending limit for the DoT was £12.8bn in 2010.

    So, where's the subsidy then?

    It's in externalised costs.

...for parking spaces at a station, which unless I'm very much mistaken regarding the purpose of stations, means any subsidy (£6,500 will be recouped by three years of parking season ticket anyway) is surely going to subsidise rail use, not car use.
