I have the 08-09 model Carrera vulcan an it needs some upgrades, i thinking of buying the Shiamno XT M780 group set and some Rock Shox XC 30 TK Coil to go with it.
I wanted to know is it worth upgrading this bike because i plan to replace everything but the the frame.

The frame is ok. Replace forks, then wheels, then brakes, then gears. Try to save up for a slightly better fork than that, or even buy a good used Recon or Reba air fork. The XC30 is a little flexy and basic in its coil sprung model. Wheels, get some Mavic 319 rims on a set of Deore or Superstar hubs, expect around 220 for them. Brakes SLX seem to be a good value choice right now, you can get them online for around £65 each if you use your existing discs. Avoid Avids.Then get a cheap Deore or SLX groupset from somewhere.0

I would cheapen the groupie and fit better forks than that...the forks have more effect on how the bike rides, yet XC's aren't a massive improvement over your XCM's.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Make sure you get the correct steerer & axel options option and you save £30 once you check out
Personally - I'd go for the Rebas and then a set of Stan's Crest rims of Switch Evo hubs from Superstar;

That's £470 spent so a bit over budget but will transform your bike into a new one overnight.
Then I'd go for a dropper seatpost - Reverb's (with remote) can be got for about €200 or KS dropper from Superstar are half prive right now - £120 but with no, handlebar remote (one can be added but they are pricey)
Then after that I'd get a set of Deore or SLX brakes"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Check links in my sig to what you can do with the Carrera HT frames.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
My first proper mtb was a Vulcan, from what I can remember the worst two things on it were the rubbish fork and the narrow bars.0

In terms of riding I agree, everything else is just a bit heavier than top end stuff but works....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
