Which ratio up front

I am currently riding a single speed road ike 42-16. On most roads I find it quite easy to pedal and I am able to negotiate all buthe most severe hills. My question is, I want to move up to a bigger chain ring but I am unsure which size to go for, can anyone offer any advice. I appreciate this can be a little subjective, but I want to get the ratio right as once fitted there is no going back.

Thanks

Why. Cheaper and easier to fit a smaller sprocket.

i assume this is for more speed? at the moment your about 70 gear inches, changing the chainring to a 46 would push it to 75 gear inches which would give a bit more speed with out being too stiff.

most road FGSS tend around the 70-80 gear inches.

as you say it's really quite subjective.

A 15 sprocket would do almost the same thing without the expense of a new ring and chain.

"Subjective" is quite right. No person has the same ratio sweet spot especially on a SS. How can anyone tell you the proper chainring to go for? Only you can "guess" the ratio needed. As a previous SS user on a MTB (which I loved) you'll either spin or grind not matter what ratio you go for IMO, that's just the nature of all SS bikes.
