Too much: i was thinking £400 tops.

If it has that perfect fit, sure, but are better bikes for that cash (and less).

To much for spec or to much for brand?

Spec - £550 buys you some really good kit like the Rockrider 8.1 which sorts a much better fork.

Fork is critical in budget bikes.

What about Merida bikes in general how do they stack up against the Comp?

Not bad, they make frames for a lot of other people, so the frames are quality. But not always well thought out specs.
