Painting front wheel

Ok so my old 90's Giant road bike needs a new front wheel, current wheel has a nasty crack due to pot hole ! Its not repairable and tbh I would not risk riding a repaired wheel. I have a perfectly servicable spare, its a few years old but has good quality sealed bearings and it runs straight a true. Problem is that its silver in colour and in places the paint is flaking off, My back wheel is black. I want to have the same colour wheels so I am planning on spraying the front wheel (spokes / hubs included).

I could try and tape the rim braking surface but it will take ages and getting a perfect curve will be a pain so I am thinking of just painting the wheel as is then popping in some old worn brake pads set deliberately so that they just touch the rim and run the wheel on my bike stand for 10 mins or so to wear of the paint on the braking surface, I would then chuck away the old pads and put the original good pads back and reset the brake.

Has anyone tried this ? Is this the best way to get the wheel painted ?

I'm too tight to buy a new wheel and I don't want to waste a perfectly good spare wheel.

Should also mention that I already have a nearly full can of satin black spray paint plus primer from another project I am working on so there is no addition costs involved.

Cover any surface you do not require the paint to stick to with vaseline. It then just washes off.
    Yellow is the new Black.
