Funnily enough, Franz Ferdinand are guilty of putting the most disappointing song on the end of a truly awesome intro with Take Me Out.
Truly brilliant intro builds up so much promise of what's to come....
and then just kind of fizzles out into indie landfill.
Somebody should write the song that the intro deserves!0 -

I saw SLF on a school trip (3 times) when school trips were school trips. I also saw The Clash and The Jam with the school. Happy days.0 -
Just thought of Tie Your Mother Down (Queen, A Day At The Races) but better than that, the old Buzzcocks hit 'Ever Fallen In Love With Someone You Shouldn't Have Fallen In Love With'.
All Night Long by Rainbow in their pop period is good.
Going For The One - Yes. That'll do too.
And on that theme - Won't Get Fooled Again, by The 'Ooo. Top stuff.0 -
Trying not to, but can't help but nominate Brassneck by The Wedding Present.
Problem with that one is it's tricky to call it an amazing opening riff, but the aggression and harsh, driving brutality of it just fits the song so superbly that I can't say a bad word against it. It also happens to be the only song I'd ever consider doing as karaoke, and that's only on the assumption that I had pretty decent quantities furniture to kick over at the same time. How the hell David Gedge manages the whole stand-still-juxtaposition thing I have no idea.Mangeur0 -
How about the blues classic "Dust my Broom"?
Covered by loads of people (the Elmore James version is great) but my favourite is by Fleetwood Mac. Jeremy Spencer's opening slide is flippin' awesome.Ecrasez l’infame0 -
There's just some many great ones Smoke on the Water, Black Night, Paranoid, most stuff by The Kinks, Maiden's Phantom of the Opera etc. etc.. I would say Seven Nation Army but is that the guitar riff or the base line that sounds good??
Not an opening riff but the Knights of Cydonia riff is great.0 -
