Attaching pictures to posts

I have read previous threads on this topic but haven't found them much help!
When I try to attach pictures to my posts it says they are too big either by pixels or in file size. To get them to post they end up being quite small. Other people seem to be able to post much bigger and higher def pictures. I am taking these pictures from my pc (which have come from my camera or phone).
