I run an app on my fone called My tracks and then upload it to ridewithgps for a fuller reading of a ride I've done, however, the figures aren't always the same.

For example I did a 50miler at the weekend and on the fone app it had Elevation gain of 3322ft but when uploaded to ridewithgps it said elevation was -4692 +4863.

So did I climb 4860 ish ft or did I climb just 3322ft ish ???

In other waords, how do I know which one is the more accurate ?

Get an Ordnance Survey map and check on that.

The web site will be closer. To quote from my post on "Who to believe?" thread.

Elevation data with GPS is even worse, again to quote Garmin "It is not uncommon for satellite heights to be off from map elevations by +/- 400 ft." And Strava say "Since elevation data derived from a GPS signal is fairly inaccurate, Strava automatically corrects elevation derived from a GPS source by consulting elevation databases to determine the elevation at each point in the activity."

So ignore any elevation data you get from a mobile phone. If you upload to a web site that provides elevation correction then you will get a closer figure. Or as Gethinceri suggested, meet the OS maps out and count the contour lines.
