Replacement Chain, Chainset, Cassette Advice

My chain is worn on my Trek Marlin 29er. It’s worn to the point where I believe I now need to change the chainset (Shimano Altus M311, 42/32/22) and cassette (Shimano HG31 11-34, 8 speed). Can someone give me some advice on the correct chain (does any chain fit?) and replacement chainset and cassette. If anything I wouldn’t mind upgrading them.

    any 8 speed kit will be fine.

    you will need to get cranks that match the axel fitting and length or replace the rings or change the whole lot.

    if you go for External bearing BB and cranks get the BB shell faced by the LBS.
