Giant Anthem X5 - A good first Mountain Bike?

Hi,
I have been offered a "Giant Anthem X5 (2011)" for £600
I'm really keen to get a nice mountain bike, but am very new to the sport so don't want anything too over the top for my first bike (I road cycle a lot however). It seems like a pretty good deal, but I wanted to ask the experts if you thought this would be a good purchase?
Specs are here: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/anthem.x5/7865/48068/#specifications
I plan to use this on trails and cycling around the south downs. From what I can see, it has a good frame and so would be worth upgrading should that be necessary? I can't really afford anything more than £600, so second hand is my only option. I should also note I'm very tall so finding a bike second hand in my size (which this is) is rare.
Is this a good price/worth going for? Many thanks for your expertise!
