What rear derailleur do I need for my 8 speed Carerra Vulcan

I bought a cheap Vulcan and the back derailleur snapped off today.
I just want to buy a cheap replacement and bang it on myself if possible.
The thing is, the one that was on it isn't the original part I don't think, so I want to make sure I get the right type.

I don't care about buying a really good one as it's not my main bike anyway. I just need to know if there are different types and if I need a specific one to fit my frame or as it has 8 speed rear.

Thanks

What shifters are on the bike?

Did the derailer snap, or the bit it bolts to (the hanger?)

Mine had a sram x4, but replaced with a x5 which is much better.
  • I'm going to take a guess on Shimano Altus or at best the XR4.

Actually, I just looked and it looks like it's just the hanger. Right?

    Are these all the same?

    Thanks

Ahh yes, just the hangar, I reckon halfords may be the best bet then, can't cost too much

Yeah I think it's just the hanger. Can you see my pic?
    The shifters are sram sx4

    Thanks

Definitely hanger - have a word with halfords, they should be able to order a new one.

    Great. Thanks :)

So the hangers aren't all universal? I have to get a Carerra one or something?

Hangers aren't universal, luckily most halfords carry stock and they are one of the cheapest around....

Hi everyone. Thanks for your previous help.
I changed the hanger and got the gears working lovely. Unfortunately, after 2 rides, the hanger snapped again. What could be causing this?

    Thanks

Hi, I havent' fallen off. I only rode it twice on the road.

Do you think the derailleur could be causing it?

The mech in your pic looks very mullered for something only ridden twice on the road.

  • You could try buying a BETD hanger as they are machined so they should be stronger than the forged Halfords hangers.

Except too strong a hanger defeats the object. It is supposed to be sacrificial to stop the mech and frame getting wrecked.
If that many hangers are breaking something is wrong.

My Hanger is still going from 2006, something else is wrong.....

Check for stiff links in the chain, check that in big/big the chain is long enough, check for chain suck on the chainwheels, check that on the biggest rear the mech isn't hitting the rear sprocket.
