Cycling near Nice in early June?

We're off to France for a family holiday the first two weeks of June and as the inlaws are joining us for a week of it (5th - 13th), i've got permission from the wife to slip off for a day's cycling- or possibly even two days if i'm a really good boy!!!

The area we're going to is about 45 mins drive south west of Nice. Having never been before and never having cycled in France at all, i was wondering if anyone would have any pointers around the best way to organise myself to get the most out of the short time in the saddle that i'll have.

Does anyone know of any sportives in the area that week or a website that would be likely to list them if there were any?

I'm not taking my own bike so i'll have to hire one. I'd heard previously that some of the hire shops often have organised 'club run' style rides that tourists can join. Again would anyone be able to point me in the right direction for further info about this?

Many thanks in advance.

There is a calendar of French sportives there - haven't checked it to see if there are any in your area.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

You could do the Randonnee du Haut Var Verdon on 9 June, start and finish at the Place Trussy in the centre of Lorgues (near the tourist office there). Lorgues is about halfway between Nice and Marseille.

This is a FFCT event organised by the local Lorgues cycling club, and like many FFCT events is a bit like a UK sportive (i.e. no mass start) however also without any timing, so unlike proper continental sportives, not competitive.
The routes (178 km, 139 km and 100 km) will be signposted and you'll also get a route card and there will be feeding stations along the routes. Register on the morning at the start, and set off any time betweeen 7.00 and 10.30. Entry fee for non-FFCT members is 6 Euros.

I don't know the routes of this event but I would guess from the event name that they go up north of Lorgues to the Gorges of the Verdon. If you hope for some cycling company, get there early as most riders will set off before 8.30.
  • I cycled one day with these guys last year http://cyclecotedazur.com/ and hired the bike from them. They do self supported routes as well. The day after I went out myself having saved the route as a course on my Garmin. See below. This is a nice route, the first hill Col d'Eze is basically the last day time trial route from Paris Nice and the second hill is the Col de Madone made famous as Lance Armstrong's big training hill and where the Trek Madone got it;s name. There is a good train service in and out of Nice so you could easily come and get a bike.
