Hi, I'm in the process of upgrading my drivetrain but I want to get all the components brand new so I don't have problems with jumping etc from different wear levels. I will be running a single ring up front. I currently run a 42t largest ring and NEVER use the middle and granny ring. I should be getting alivio armsnand I'm looking to get a 44t single ring up front since I'm getting fitter and I use my bike to get to school. I don't know if the gears at the front are realavent or not.
I'd be looking for one that is 20 quid max and more light than durable, if that makes sense. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks.

Do you ever ride off road. All the cool kids are doing the opposite0

Bloody hell, thats a bargain! Thanks Supersonic.
I actually started to go offroad last weekend. It was a 4 hour bike ride which is only loose gravel canal paths at the start, then it gets rougher and turns into actual offroading with rocks and stones and what not. Thats why i had the picture with the offroad tyres in the CC thread
Ill be doing it every weekend and when school finishes, every day in the summer. I didnt know about it before then.0 -
Is your rear wheel 7 speed or 8, 7 is fairly rare....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

It's a 7 speed. It already has a 7 speed on there so definitely 7.0
-
And definately a cassette not screw on freewheel (which is much more common)?
Noting that as a 7speed cassette can be fitted to an 8, it having a 7 doesn't mean it's not an 8!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
I'm certain its a cassette. The freewheel tool doesn't fit, and there is very slight play from the lock ring and smallest sprocket.
You can fit an 8 speed cassette on there?? The cassette has never been changed on there, but I think have an 8 speed cassette somewhere, so once my tool comes ill remove the7 and try the 8 on.0 -

Ohh.
I was reading Sheldon Browns guide and it said that i could get an 8 speeds on a 7 speed shimano hyperglide freehub which i believe is what i have. But ill have to use 8 sprockets from a 9 speed cassette.
I use this cassette which is a shimano hyperglide, so i might go 8 speed ...not sure.

Have I read this right? You are going to run a 44t front ring only ? Jesus wept! No hills near you then?0

What hub is on there at the minute, and what cassette?0 -
Yeap, you read correctly.
I did 50k on country roads with many many hills and it was totally fine with a 42t only up front, and i did regret not having adequate top speed for the straight roads and going downhill.
I do go uphill quite alot, the journey to school every morning is mostly uphill but i dont find it too much of a problem with only the large ring.0 -

I dont know what the hub is since i havent removed a cassette from it before. The cassette is the one in the google link. Shimano 7 speed hyperglide cassette0 -
Just get another one then. You cannot put 8 speeds on a 7 speed freehub body, unless you crack a 9 speed cassette and respace it, and then your shifters wouldn't work anyway.0
-
Yeah ill get a new one in that case. So the cassette you showed me in the first link is the best bet?0
-
If you like the ratios, yep.0

11t sounds quick enough for me I dont really care about the other rings. Just the smallest.
Thanks.0 -
You don't get it do you.0

You may only use the big ring on your commute to school, however you wont use it on any kind of decent climb. You would be betterwith just the middle dude. Unless you are just using your bike for commuting? If so there is a foum specifically for that type of cycling.0

I did think it was meant to be a jump bike?Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

I haven't mentioned the chucker in this thread. I've only been talking about my arrowhead. Chucker is going to be 8 speed with a 32t, not 7 speed with 44t0
-
OK....that's fine then....from proper MTBing though 44T single is just too big, especially on a 7 speed where lowest is a 28T (without a horrid megarange freewhel!) versus say a 34T on a 9 speed.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

^^ he's right. That's a very limiting range. If you only plan to ride on the road you'll be fine, but that'll be horrible off road.0
-
It will be mostly road though. It will be on the road for the weekdays.
If anything i can still get the 44t and if the range is still poor then i could add a 2nd chainring and put my spare shifters on. But ill give it a think first.
LOL those megadrive freewheels are disgusting.0
