I'm wanting to get some roof bars and bike
carriers for my 10plate mondeo. are there
any brands that people would recommend?
and any to stay away from?

I've looked up ford bars and 2x Thule 591
carriers and that's coming to about £250. or
some CRUZ ones from roofbox.co.uk come in
at £100 for everything.

I want something thats solid and safe but I
don't want to spend a fortune and they won't
get used every weekend or anything like that,
maybe only a handful of times a year.

is there any danger in buying bars or carriers
secondhand?

definately reccomend thule bars and racks. the best quality and fitting i have found. that and car manufacturers use them for OE stuff.
GIANT PROPEL SL1 for racing and posing
    TREK 2.5 training and commuting
GIANT REVEL 1 LTD for when it gets all snowy
  • Thule proride bike carrier, can't recommend it enough. Can be had for £75 each from Amazon.

definitely thule 591 carriers. I sold mine 2nd hand to a mate. I had mine for about 2 years and only sold them cos I get a new company car every 6 months and they're different so I didn't want to keep forking out for a new roof rack every 6 months.

I bought my roof rack second hand though for about £50

    this any good for you?

Decathlon sell decent bike racks for the roof, and tow bar mounted racks for that matter. I've used both for long distance journeys with no problems.

I would spend as much as you can on roof bars though. I've bought cheap on eBay and its a false economy

I use Thule bars and feet with Mont Blanc Scott bike carriers. Never had a problem with either though the Thule 591 bike carriers get great reviews (you pay the price though).
