Basically, yes or no?

I'm not talking about the full kit, just a jersey.

I understand about say the yellow, green, polka dot or world champion jerseys for example, you have earned the right to wear them. But what about a normal team jersey?

Perhaps use the search function to avoid this old chestnut doing 28 pages again?

There is a place for retro jerseys worn in an ironic manner.

But apart from that I don't really see the appeal. Club kit or plain kit for me.

I think its something that you change your mind when you've been a 'cyclist' for longer - initially you think its ok to wear anything, but then you start to understand that wearing team kit makes you look like the guy who wears an England Football Shirt as the mainstay of his casual wardrobe.

Don't see a problem with it, it's no different to wearing a football top or any other sport that you follow. There were loads of team jerseys at last weekend Surrey Cyclone Sportive

It's not the same as wearing football shirt as casual clothing though is it?

I support Everton, I would never wear a football shirt as casual though, but if i had football training or something of the likes, I would wear it. Not the full kit mind, just the shirt

    What's the difference?

    Different sports, different cultures.

Hence why I used the example of wearing it as casual clothing rather than at football training.

^-^ I personally agree with this.

It is however up to you & wear what you want and if that is a team top then so be it. However if you know that the culture is not to wear a TDF winner or world champs top as its not the done thing then you have to understand that wearing a team jersey would be taken to be the same by the same people and might be frowned upon too.

@ALIHISGREAT is right that its a culture thing & in football it may be considered OK to wear a football shirt to watch and train in whereas in cycling the culture is different.

You can agree with that culture or not & go your own way and I applaud anyone who does their own thing.

I'd gladly wear a team jersey. I nwouldn't go as far as the whole kit though.

I think I just chose my birthday present!

Agree with above, vintage is cool but I wouldn't wear a current kit.

As for football - what really gets me is grown men wearing full football kits casually in the summer. Including socks!

the reason that people baulk at wearing a Yellow or Polka dot jersey is that it's a trophy not just a piece of clothing - the difference between wearing a Chelsea jersey and a replica Champions League winners medal, I'm not fussed but I wouldn't wear them myself.

Prendas are great, they sell really nice kit and service is spot on - they do the replica La Vie Claire mondrian jersey that I'm tempted to get.... that molteni is nice also

Kingofthetailwind - there is a twitter account called Full Kit w...kers that posts pictures, some of them are very funny, especially the ones with shinpads!

Agree that champions and classification jerseys are a total no no, you just look like a tool. Fullkitw*nkers explains it beautifully, equivalent to a spot of Wed night fives in full Man Utd regalia! Not that you really support a 'team' in cycling, I see no problem wearing a replica jersey of a team/rider you have a soft spot for. Or just a plain good looking jersey, i.e. most retro jerseys, most FDJ jerseys, that white Cervelo TT jersey from a few years ago. 2013 peloton is a bit dull TBH, Lotto Belisol looks OK I suppose.

Haha, thanks for the clear up guys.

I was only asking as I'd like an omega pharma quick step jersey, being from the Isle of Man we are all rather proud of Mark Cavendish ha

Your money bud, wear what you want.
As elderone says, who cares what others think unless of course you have a wardrobe full of unworn Rapha and Assos in which case I dont think this should be worn but sent to me immediately.................

I agree about the team kit thing-how long before a kit becomes retro?

  • It's not the same on the continent - go to Belgium on a Sunday and you'll see hundreds in team kit - the whole thing including socks :) any team is ok - full sky kit no problem - four of us from the UK were the only people NOT in team shirts!!

There seems to be a culture of full replica kit on the continent (including matching team rain jackets and team correct helmets etc) and they dont understand why a lot of UK riders wear mix and match gear. The British are naturally more reserved I suppose.

Personally I think team kit looks OK if the team is defunct or obscure, but full-on SKY or (god forbid) Lampre looks way too fanboyish for my tastes.

Obviously everyone can wear what they want and good luck to them etc, but I am obsessive about everything cycling so cant help having an opinion :) .

Buy what you want and wear what you want. If someone gets funny about it then who's the idiot ? The person in the kit that they like and that they bought with their money, or the sad tw*t who needs to get a life and not worry about what others are wearing ?

Personally, I think that those moaning about people wearing team kit should f*ck off and mind their own business.

    +1.

  • No need to resort to name calling guys, it's a bit pathetic. People are just expressing their opinion that they personally wouldn't wear replica kit. Not having a go at people who do.

I can see why some people weren't keen on this subject being raised again!
