Export out of Strava - into Garmin?

Hi All-

I'm sure this is easy but I can't seem to get it to work...
I currently have the ability to export routes out of Strava (mine or anyone's) as .gpx files (I got a free premium upgrade for some reason for a month).
Anyway, I'd like to drop these routes into my Garmin so i can follow them sometime....
Have tried using Garmin connect "manual upload" ... it thought about it then said it didn't like the files (despite saying it takes .gpx files)
Then I thought I could maybe just drop the .gpx files into the "courses" folder on the Garmin by just "copy-paste". That didn't work either...course not visible on the list when you view the courses on the unit.
Am I being a numpty? Surely this doesn't need to be so difficult?

Cheers, John

Which Garmin? Assuming it's a 500 you'll need to convert them to .tcx before dropping them in the NewFiles folder.

It's an 810...don't think they support .tcx
I'll try dropping the .gpx into the NewFiles folder you mentioned

Why wouldn't they? The 500 and 800 do...

I haven't imported from Strava into Garmin Connect but I have from this site http://gb.mapometer.com/ and to get it to work I have to choose the export with tracks option, so if you can do that, it should work. I've done this and then uploaded to my edge 500 and could follow the route.

    Thanks...will give it a go.
I guess a gpx file isn't just a gpx file....needs to be "tweaked" befor Garmin like it.

Maybe, but getting the file into garmin connect is independent of the unit.
  • Anyone can export GPX files from Strava using third party tools like the Cosmo Catalano one -
here's a tutorial I wrote almost exactly one year ago, it should still work.

That is really rather good, seems to work a treat

Spot on Alan - just tested the process complete...out of strava, into connect and then into the Edge unit via that link on your page - no issues. It must do some geeky stuff to the gpx file to make Garmin accept it.
    Anyway - many thanks.

A lot of websites do not use the exact schema for the gpx files, therefore the garmin rejects them. It is not garmin that is at fault in this instance but rather the sloppy handling of the gpx files by the export function not following the file format correctly.
  • Has anyone found out how to transfer a course made into the Strava route planner into a Garmin 810?

It would have to be without plugging the Garmin into USB, so I guess it would need importing into Garmin Connect.

The Garmin 810 does support .tcx files if you have uploaded the new firmware and you shouldn't need to use any programs to get you route you have created in Strava onto you 810.

Is you Garmin linked to your Strava account? I just create the route in strava, save it and then use the export button in your routes. You can then choose to download as .tcx or.gpx file. Save this file somewhere on your desktop/laptop and then copy and paste into Newfiles on the garmin unit (attached via usp cable).
  • I need to get it into Garmin connect I (actually not me a friend of mine) hasn't got a PC to connect into via USB, just an iPhone.
