Merse and Moor 300k Audax

Here was me this morning at 0630 after a 1hour drive in layby in the middle of nowhere just getting ready to go for 160mile in the Scottish Borders when as soon as I get on my bike a group of cyclist pass by on the main road with lights flashing and going at a tremendous pace.

They give me a queer look and a wave and I set off in pursuit and then I realise that a mile further back there is another group on the road and I am really interested who these guys are. When I finally catch the first group who are tearing along I find out they are on a 300k audax (merse and moor). Now I can get around the marmotte in just over 8 hours but some of these guys are really hammering it and the pace was really high and it was too much for me who was going for measly 160 mile run but taking in every climb to the English border and back and I ease off as do some of the group but a few disappear into the distance.

I end up going over the Granite Hills to Innerleithen where the group I was with stopped to refuel as they have been on the road for 3 hours and its only 0720. I ended up doing my run in 11hours but was thinking that I really did not want to do another 40miles on top of what I done.

Good luck to all who did this event and I hope that the some the riders I chatted with are okay as some said they had never been any more than 130miles in one day but were ready to push themselves further. It make me feel better that there are other crazy guys who are like myself.

Hats off to the quick riders - you really were pushing on.

Despite having ridden many audaxes, I am still always in awe of the real fast boys particularly once you get onto the longer rides (300+). They can hold a pace that I struggle to do a short little 100 in!
