Yeah, been to SF quite a few times. She's moving because she got much better job offers in Phoenix (she's a neurologist).

The downside of SF is the concentration of smug. When I went with her to the gym there were 38 hybrids in the parking structure and that was a quiet day!

I work a lot in San Diego so I know smug. :)
Have you visited north and south cali ? It always amazes me just how many cyclists there are throughout California.

My wheels may have a 5k retail, but the enjoyment I get whilst riding them is incomparable to when I had wheels of the same retail on my car. I drive a beater so I can have nicer bikes. Priorities and all that...

Really? What are these 5k wheels and who make them?

Yup. I'll be in San Diego for a week in June. Got some interesting terrain that needs exploring!

See, I knew that me and you could get along :)

Seriously though, it seems you get around a lot. How do you cope with the west coast heat ?

Lived in Arizona for over 20 years. Heat is not an issue for me!

Wow, im a Vegas fan through and through. I know Vegas is not Arizona but its only a short journey through Henderson and into Downtown. I went through Arizona a few years back on the Gumball Rally, I remember the way the police hid behind billboards and tumbleweed.

I trust you have seen the appropriate episode of South Park - where a dangerous cloud of smug from SF combines with a cloud of Smug from the residents of South Park who have taken to driving hybrids and threatens the globe? If not, you should!

Vegas = my idea of hell on Earth. I feel warm and comfortable in the presence of the Rocky Mountains though! Mind you, even there there are gambling towns and they seem to all be appalling places no matter how stunning the setting.

There are not many people I know of who don't like Vegas.
The ability to escape for a few days is wonderful. Whatever you want, however you want it, it's available in Vegas and all you have to do is make a quick call.

I'm not a fan of Vegas despite having been there about 20 times. It's most likely due to the fact that I've put a few stripper's kids through uni with my generous contributions and never received a Thank You card.

Vegas is great for a few days, after about day 4 - you just see it for what it is - a place to go for people with gambling addictions. I've seen people waste thousands and you can tell by the look on their face - they can't afford it.

Cali - lovely - if you have a license - rent a harley and do PCH1.

All the talk of carbon wheels reminds me of this:

My sister went their on her honeymoon and enjoyed it and I'd probably appreciate the spectacle for about half an hour before I'd want to run away screaming. I just find casinos about the most depressing places I've ever been so Vegas is bound to be a turn off - James Bond has a lot to answer for making the whole thing sound glamorous rather than plain tawdry. Give me Portland Oregon any day! It's a bit dull but it is nice!

Does Vegas have 'Dial some culture' then?! I'm sceptical but happy to be proved wrong!

    DIY summed it up perfectly.
For a few days you have the perfect escape.
I stayed for 9 days once which was too much but for 4 days as a work trip or 7 days when I go for SEMA in November it's all good.
The casinos are fantastic, you have to look past the slots and tables, I play every time I go but for small stakes usually (I won big once when drunk) you have the most wonderful shows on earth within walking distance and you needn't spend much. If you were on a budget you could manage on £35 a day ($55) as you can eat as cheap or as expensive as you like and have excellent quality at either end of the scale.
There is so much to do that doesn't cost a dime so for me, it's a fab place and I couldn't imagine a year going by without the pilgrimage to Vegas.

Thing is, I have no desire to win money. I'm happy to earn it but I see no attraction in chancing unfavourable odds to get some more. Even if you win, it's either not very much in which case, what is the point - or it could be big but you can only do that by gambling a lot (if there is to be any realistic likelihood of it happening and any odds less likely than me being axe murdered in my bed are odds I don't want happening to me!). The whole thing just doesn't do anything for me. Not that I've tried much. I did go to the Nags once and covered my stakes and entry cost but although it was fun the once, it seemed like a lot of effort to go to to break even!

I think the point I was trying to make was that here is far more to Vegas than gambling.
I have a go for the fun of it and with small stakes but get bored quickly. I've seen people lose hugs amounts of money, throwing down 10k chips without a hint I worry but really, who can afford that ?
I love Vegas for what it is, an escape from reality once or twice a year for 4-7 days depending on work and always long to go back from the minute I take off from McCarren and head back towards London.

I think 3 days is my limit. By day 4 I'm just admiring all the innovative ways they've developed for parting me from my money.

My Vegas limit is just under 36 hours, and that's only if 12 of those are spent in Red Rocks.

For me, a maximum of 2 nights, then get me back to reality!

When I went for 2 nights, as part of a road trip, I was amazed that I didn't feel tired, even though i only slept for about 3 hours each night. The buzz of the place and the Oxygen they pump into the casino's keep you awake, helping you spend more money.
