Defy 1 (std) Vs Defy 2 (upgraded)

Hi
I like the the look of the Giant Defy Models.

The Defy 1 must be popular as they're starting to look sold out. However this bike at just under £1k comes with a mostly 105 GroupSet. And it's brother the Defy 2 has the Tiagra.

I'm wondering as a newbie if I'll notice a whole lot between the two. Except the looks, doesn't the 105 route under the bar tape.

Both bike cut a corner on breaks including the Tektro. Everyone tells me there not as good. And an upgrade to Tiagra would be well worth it.

Question is Defy 1 or Defy 2 (Tiagra Breaks). Plus still save some cash.

Please Advise

Jon

as a newbie probably not. It is likely to feel a little heavier when lifting but probably not that noticeable when riding. If I was you and depending on what comes on the two bikes, I would go for the lower price one and use the spare cash to swap out the wheels (and probably tyres and tubes if they're cheap crap) This is where you will really notice the difference. I have had tiagra before and it worked flawlessly...durability of the chain was crap though.

Jon, I do know where you can get a Defy 1 for £899 and he has them in stock. Give Chris a ring at Chris's Bikes in Girton Cambs.

The defy 1 also has smooth bonding compared with the 5,4,3, and 2. A small difference but it does look more finished. I bought a defy 4 over a 3 or 2 just because i liked the coulours and thought it would be ok to upgrade the G set later. Loads of hassle as its an expensive way to go. I sacked it in th eend and changed bikes.

It was between the defy 1 and 2 when I took the plunge 5 months ago. With the bike to work program the defy 2 was 500 euro while the 1 was closer to 800. For me the difference was not worth it so went with the defy 2 and spent the difference on bibs etc. The brakes are poor on the defy 2 but just changing the blocks improved them. Wiggle are doing a set of clarks with a spare set of pads for 20 euro or go with Swiss stop pads. Changing the pads was enough for me.
