Hi, i was just looking at chainrings and im a bit spoilt for choice at the moment. All the chainrings i see are all 4-5 quid between eachother so i can go for pretty much any of them really.
Ive got these choices so far (they are all for 42t rings):
Middleburn
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Middleburn-4a ... 5d3588a7a8
Shimano (This one is by far the cheapest)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-CHAIN ... 43b0161833
Trailbright
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trailbright-X ... 231fa3a8a0
Truvativ
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Truvativ-Chai ... 2ec7265144
Which brand would be the best to go for, considering weight, durability and what you get for your money? Thanks.

So what are you after? What speed? Material?
Steel is heavier, but cheaper and lasts longer. But as it is the outer, it is not used as much. Unless you are going single ring...
Bolt pattern?0 -
im going 8 speed at the back, single at the front, and im not too bothered about the material. Though i think id prefer the lighter aluminum. Depends on what you and others think would be the best one to go for.
Bolt pattern is 4 bolt 104BCD
Thanks for the info.0 -
Plus the Middleburn and Trailbright are actually around £30 for the size you want.I don't do smileys.

you don't want a 42t if you're going single ring! between 32-36 is best imo, E13 make a dedicated single speed guide ring, best out there imo0

+1, for your Chucker (?) a 42T would be very very wrong!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

I tried explaining this but he wouldn't listen! 32T ring that I gave you is absolutely fine0

Guys, im keeping the 32t ring for the jumping! So it will be fine. I was considering using the 42t cause its gonna take me an age to get to the jump track but ive decided ill just use the 32t 90% of the time.
The new chainring will be for days when i go on a longer bike ride with the family. I run the single 42t on another bike and have had no problems. The derraleur is snapped so it is pretty much a single speed upfront.
@lawman, ill give that E13 a look.
Thanks everyone for your help.0 -
Another problem is whether it'll actually fit. if you use it in the middle ring location, a 42t will probably not clear the frame. In fact i'm betting on a chucker designed for jumping there's no way a 42t will fit due to clearance, and placing it in the outer ring location will just screw up the chainline. You have other bikes more suited for distance so why bother changing chainrings on this one, as said the 32t will be fine. I do long xc rides on a 34t and it's more than adequate.0

I think you might be right saying that the ring will hit the frame in the middle location, does look like it will be pretty tight. I was intending to use it on the outer. I dont see how it will mess up the chainline but im a noob so im not gonna argue
Sorry to be persistent, but what would be the largest ring i could get? would a 36t be the maximum? or would it be less.
Thanks.0 -
If you put your single ring in the outer position then when you're using your lowest couple of gears you will be putting excessive lateral stress on the chain. Single ring must be in middle position to avoid this.
I use Blackspire rings on my two single ring set-ups. 34t rings on both the DH & 'fun' (4X/Jump frame) bikes"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

So you'll swap the chainring mid ride?0 -
I was thinking to change it when i get there...but i realised thats really stupid, despite it being quick and easy.
But now i think ill just stick with 32t for 90% of the time like i said, only using the larger one on long bike rides.0 -
But how about chain length ?
