This is a hill during a relatively local club's hilly race 2012. This is Cornmill hill and I think this os the part of the hill that is a whopping 28%

Spoiler alert

Features a lot of slow motion falls

    Fantastic! :D

I particularly like the fall at 4.30!

But on a serious note, a 'big hand' to those giving it a go. I would have fallen off too. Probably in a more spectacular manner. And ended up walking to the top.

Still trying to psych myself up to give Edge Hill a go.

A 250 mt section of road that goes up 30 mt... hardly the Galibier!
I think this Strava segments have gone a bit out of hand. The country is peppered with short stretches of road where it appeared to make more sense to tarmac straight rather than with a bend... that does not make them into Epic climbs... You can probably find some inner sides of steep bends that go up to 35-40%

Traction seems to be the biggest problem. Not sure how long hill is before the camera but it doesnt look very long..

Would definitely recommend it. Once you have head to Northend via Warmington and pop up to Burton Dassett. Not the most logical of routes but is one of the more interesting sections of road in Warwickshire.

Were those yellow jackets on offer?

Anyway, it looks relatively straight forward... in the dry. The rain that fell before the event certainly adds another dimension!

A tip I learned from mtb is that when you have to stop, turn your bike more side on to the hill before setting off, then you get a bit of momentum going before you start climbing again.

That is a trick that I have used for years, and makes a huge difference. I wouldn't want to try to set off any other way now, and I do it automatically now so I am happy!

    That climb looks brutal!

It's the exact opposite of a Rapha advert.

Also chapeu to the bloke in blue at the very end who gets to the bend and says "nah fuck it" and decides to walk.
  • On a more serious question; how the hell do you tarmac a 28% slope, nevermind roller the thing??

    He's got a point.

I came across this hill on Saturday and the slight kink a third of the way in is ridiculously steep!

It is a small hill, with a very steep section, but i dont think I would be able to get up it. The corner where the camera is set up is notorious for fallers, thats why its put there.

It does look steep but the bigger issue seems to be the road surface that just does not provide any traction hold. If you are not already in the right gear and try to get into the right gear at that point you are going over.

I'm off to do Applecross next week (Bealach na Ba) - I'll let you know how tough it is.
Funnily enough, the road actually starts climbing quite gently, lulling you into thinking, 'This is easy'. Then it gets steeper. Then it gets relentless. Then the road surface deteriorates so you begin to wonder if it was last tarred by John McAdam (1756 - 1836). When you think you must be near the top, you round another hairpin. Then it really climbs. That's when even very fit folk might decide to get off and walk.

4 of us doing Alpe D'Huez this year the day after the TdF goes up it...have a turbo training DVD that takes you up the 21 hairpins.....positively bricking myself if Im honest!!!

Me too! Going across camping, watching TDF Alpe D'Huez stage then staying on a couple of days to attempt it and others. There's still 12 weeks training to go!

I keep telling myself it's not that steep, it's just long.

It looks from the map on the above link that the route goes backwards. The classic climb of Bealach na Ba is from Tornapress. The climb from Applecross is much shorter.

I hadn't noticed that - but yes I'm doing it from Tornapress.

I'm also off to the Alps in May - doing Alpe d'Huez and Telegraphe & Galibier (Basically the route of La Marmotte) - hence the reason I'm heading up to do Applecross for some training.

Going the Monday night, probably Eurotunnel, coming back Sunday, but Tuesday and Sunday will be taken up with driving.
