Transporting Track Bikes

My son is about to buy a track bike and the only way I can get it to/from the velodrom is on an external bike rack. I am concerned about transporting it in the wet though, does anyone else have to carry their bikes on a rack and if so do you have any tips (such as wheel covers??).

Yes, I carry my track bike on a rack with no problems. In the wet, I'd suggest just taking an old towel to give the whole bike a wipe down before riding it (I normally have one with me anyway to give the tyres a quick wipe before riding to remove any debris).
You could always remove the wheels when transporting the bike if you're worried about them - the front at least, and maybe the back, although I'd be concerned about a chain swinging about if you don't have a quick link or similar.

If you only use it at one velodrome you may be able to pay to store it there rather than taking it every time.
