How can I tell if I have a short or long cage campag RD?

I've got campag centaur groupset on my bike, which I bought in 2010. The rear mech looks like this:

I need to find out whether I've got a short, medium or long-cage derailleur as I'm looking to replace the cassette with a lower-gearing, but have heard there is incompatability with short and medium cages with lower gears.

So, question is - how can I find out?

The site above suggests that short cage is 55m, but which bit am I measuring?

Look at it? It's quite easy to tell. Try measuring from the centre of one jockey wheel to the other.

    Road - Dolan Preffisio
    MTB - On-One Inbred

I have no idea what's going on here.

As above; it's saying the 55mm is from one jockey wheel axle to the other. Or just see which picture your mech resembles.
  • Sorry to be a nobber, but I'm none the wiser and my brain hurts.

I've taken a couple of photos of the rear mech here:

It *looks* to me like it's a medium cage mech (I don't think there is such a thing as a long-cage road campag?)

Center to center of "Upper to lower pulley-axle". Seems pretty clear to me.

Changed my mind - it's short. Measure from the axle of one of the pulley wheels to the other.

You would only need a long cage for a triple. You might get away with a short for a low geared system. I've got a 50/34 front and a 29/12 rear (Miche) and it still works fine with a 2010 short cage Centaur rear mech - though it is at it's complete limit.

You have a short cage rear mech. I've looked at your pix and compared it to my medium cage 10-speed Chorus.

Although it's not officially recommended, many people find they can run a 13-29 cassette fine with a short cage 10-speed Campag mech.
