Hi All,

Have any of you suffered numbing of the crown jewels?? I was on the saddle for 5 hours continious, 2 massive hills and competed 137km... but sat/sun my nuts were numb.... is this the norm, first time it happened.... first time ive not had a coffee stop to split up the ride...

Yes. I stood up out of the saddle for a minute and it went back to normal.

    Pretty common for cyclists.

You're putting pressure on the perineum, which causes the numbness.

Do you have a saddle with a cutout?

I've been using a Selle Italia Flite Gel Flow Saddle for some years, its got a cut out and helped with the numb nuts problem although not totally. However had a problem with 2 of these saddles on the new bike (manufacturing defects) so have replaced it with an [expensive] Selle SMP Lite 209. This thing has a cut out you can practically get your hand through.

Tried it out last weekend and tweaked the height and tilt a little - its quite a curvy saddle so had to lower it a little, and tilt it a fraction forward of level. Did 91 miles yesterday on it (a) its comfy (b) no numb nuts at all!. At £180 its not cheap, but what price comfort???

Cheers Fellas.... I changed my saddle to a Fizik Arione... was on a prologo but was uncomfortable.. im going to give his a couple of more long rides, if problem persists, then I change..

Also, clothingwise.. I was wearing nike combat underpants and bib shorts.... what do you think to the type of undergarments worn?

Good saddle, have one on my winter bike & used well through the winter.

Try changing the saddle position a bit - tipped slightly up or down and back or forwards. It's amazing how slight changes can make a big difference to this kind of thing. I use Ariones too and if I don't have the angle and height right I get problems, but once it's sorted I find them great. Everyone's different when it comes to saddle shape of course but Ariones seem to work for most people with a bit of trial and error..
  • I use a Rido r-lt. Instead of a cutout the rear of the saddle is raised, so you can't put any pressure on your perineum.

As long as you sit on it properly, and don't allow yourself to slip forward then it's great.

I recently switched my road bike saddle to a Sella Italia SL XC Flow. Has a cutout and is 143mm wide. Numbness is not a problem except, on occasion, when riding very hard and pushing the pace, and I think this is somewhat true with most riders.

I believe the SL XC Flow started life as a MTB saddle but found more than a few people who thought it made a good road saddle as well.

I think most people with numbness problems will benefit from a slightly wider saddle than the seemingly standard 130mm or so ones. Makes for good sit bones contact and that works for me. Add a cutout to this and, for me, I've found the best on YET.

Glad I've come across this topic since I have the same exact problem. I can't afford a very expensive saddle so I will be trying this one on my next weekend ride. hope it works. My current stock speedster s50 saddle is not very comfy.

Looks pretty much like the Sella Italia SL XC Flow. Close to the same dimension In width. I may pick one of those up myself. Price is right. Try to remember that I never claimed that any saddle was as good as your living room couch. Good luck.
