Bottom Bracket Spindle Length

HELP !!! I need to replace a Bottom Bracket on a Gary Fisher Marlin 2006 bought 2nd hand.
I have removed the one fitted but it seems that its been replaced before !!
I really would like to know the spindle length it was supplied with as I'm not 100% sure the BB fitted is the correct one ?

Spindle length depends on the crankset as much as the bb shell width, so if the cranks have been changed, then the BB may need to be a different spindle length than the original.
