Morning all,
I've recently bought a Giant TCR and have to say I'm loving it. I'm up to 20-30 mile rides at least 3 times a week despite the cold weather we've had! One thing I've noticed and have wondered if its common to have a constant streaming nose! I'm constantly clearing it and have to say getting pretty good at it rather than initialy getting it all over my shoulders!!
Cheers,
The snotty one

In my experience the nasal growler is a function of the cold. It seems to be inversely proportional to temperature.
The nose blow is achieved thus:
Close left nostril with right forefinger by arching the right hand over the nose.
Check that there is no one behind!
Turn the head to the right and emit a sharp blow from the right nostril, aiming UNDERARM.
Swap and repeat for the other side.

  • I'm sure there's many riders out there that have at some point hit an arm, leg, shoe and most embarrassingly a fellow rider!
  • Are you riding with glasses?

I've found that having my eyes sheltered from the cold air significantly reduces the amount of gunk coming out of my nose.

Strangely enough I did wear glasses today but still the same! Maybe the promise of a warmer day tomorrow might see a difference ..

I have this all the time when I'm riding and it is a tad embarrassing... Snot rockets are becoming a speciality and my left glove becomes swamp like... What to do?

I have always suffered from a nose like a dripping tap in colder weather. Even with regular snot rockets, I end up looking like a 2-year toddler with snot dripping everywhere.

I've tried eye protection in the cold and it doesn't make much difference for me.

Some people suffer, some don't it seems.

I always suffer watery eyes, even with sunnies, my eyes just tear up. Today wasnt too bad, cant wait for warmer weather so it can finally end.

my nose always runs too, i've found below freezing it seems ok, above about 10 degrees its ok but anything in between and its terrible!! I do wonder where it all comes from, can't be good for my hydration!

best solution is to master the snot rocket, but make sure you check wind direction!!

Yes and please check for cyclists behind you, I have had run ins with snotters who think its fine to just let go with me very close behind.

If you want a fist on your nose, then try it!

  • My daughter suffers with bad hay fever and nasal congestion - she was advised to try using a device called 'NeilMed Sinus Rinse' by the doctor - it's basically a squeeze bottle with some salty distilled water in which you squeeze up your hooter one side at a time to wish all the crap out of your sinuses.

It's really helped her symptoms and as I suffer from drippy nose syndrome when I ride I tried it before riding, it really does make a difference and seems to help with my breathing a surprising amount too. It's a weird feeling though, and the first couple of times the crap that comes out of your nose is rather disgusting and quite alarming!

    Like drowning?

I can hardly breathe through my nose at all, most of the time. This sounds like a good idea, if not akin to waterboarding yourself.
