I find its best to re-plot the route with Garmin Connect and send it to the device through that. You can then setup an average speed target to work to aswell. You can dump and old tcx file into the 'New Files' folder within the Garmin, but its a 'dumb' route.

Ah, right. Sorry, i'm a page ahead.
.gpx/.tcx etc are route files. They store co-ordinates etc. Download one of them and put it where you can get to it easily.
Go to a mapping site (such as http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php) and load the file. It will then draw the route over the map and show you elevation etc.
Then, assuming you have setup/registered on Garmin Connect (the online control centre for your Garmin), open it up and go to the 'Plan/Courses/New Course' part. You can draw the route on there by clicking on points of the road and it will do the rest. You can then save that in 'My Courses' and you will see an option accross the top called 'Send to Device' if your Garmin is plugged in via the USB cable.
I should state, i have an Edge500, so there might be differences in the process, but i would assume it will be very similar.
Hope that helps and that i've explained that ok.
Good Luck0 -
