Hi, i have a bit of an issue with my headset. When i bought my bike the seller said he would give me the headset and he indeed did give me the headset...just not all of it.
Here is what ive got:
Lower cup (in the frame)
Upper cup (in the frame)
Both bearing assembly's (top and bottom)
Fork steerer race
And thats it. I believe i am missing pretty much all of the upper half of my headset but im sure i have everything i need for the headset that goes on the bottom half of the headtube.
I am aware i need the top cap, star nut and bolt but that is easy for me to find/buy so that isnt an issue at the minute.
The issue is the Compression ring and the bearing cover. I have been told that they come specific with certain headsets and i cant find a compression ring anywhere...would i have to buy a cheap headset and just take the compression ring and bearing cover and save the rest for spares?
I think i may have found something pretty cool on eBay though, this part looks like it does both the job of being the bearing race cover and the compression ring! I dont wanna end up buying the wrong part though. So will this do the trick?
Many thanks.
Number 4 and the number above it (looks like 3) are the parts im missing.
Here are pictures of my headtube and what i got with it.

Except the cups right? The cups seem to be totally fine.0 -
If your buying a headset you get new cups.....
I'm sure I have a top race/seal spare that would allow you to use that lot anyway, yours for an SAE.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Yeah i know but isnt it real hassle to get the new cups in since you need a press? (i got an idea to make a homemade one but thats long. LOL)
Ill PM you on that Thanks!0 -

and they come with all the parts. tools are needed for the removal and fitting of the cups.
or go to the LBS they might have one of these.

That is ALOT of headset spares.
Ill either come to an agreement with TheBeginner or buy a whole new headset tbh. The guy at the LBS is a wanker...0 -
Hammer and screwdriver removes cups, hammer and block of wood fits them.....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

I was thinking this as a DIY headset press:
one long threaded bolt
2 nuts
2 blocks of wood
And have them arranged in this order:
nut
block of wood
upper cup
headtube
lowercup
block of wood
nut
(the bolt obviosuly runs through the whole thing)
Tighten the nuts up slowly and the wood will squeeze the cups into the frame.
All of this i can get for free too.0
