Mrs Tank was telling me earlier Edwina Currie had been on tv saying the BBC should be banning "ding dong the witch is dead" as it is disrespectful.

FFS, it's a tune that's eighty years old and you can't, surely, demand the banning of something due to the connotation some have put on it, it is ridiculous. What if "Happy days are here again" had topped the charts this week?

It's petty little things like this that make me think freedom of the press/media is vital (along with exposes of course).

  • I think she's got a point. After all, singing stuff like that about the British left is disrespectful, especially given that it's been dead for over three decades.

I was a Thatcher supporter and see no reason to ban it.
As I have said before,' SHE IS F@@KING DEAD'. She can't hear it. When you are dead, you are dead!

    Calm down dear!

It's not a go at your beloved Maggie is it.

I'm merely commenting that if Edwina were still an MP she would no doubt be righting a strongly worded letter to the BBC. If as an MP she'd be prepared to take such steps over something so trivial ( as you point out SHE IS F@@KING DEAD) then what about proper stuff like MP's expences? We'd have heard jack sh1t about them.

That's my point. FREEDOM OF THE PRESS.

Sorry Frank, I wasn't trying to defend anyone. I think enough bandwidth has been used on that topic by both sides, without changing anyone's mind eh?
I was just saying it's a non issue for the obvious reason.

I totally agree about the freedom of the press. The 'Hacked Off' group, including that user of prostitutes, Hugh Grant have helped bring about a very worrying turn of events regarding a free press.
I would rather the press be able to print what they want and back it up with facts. If they break the law, they should be punished accordingly. 'Publish and be damned!'
Although I mentioned Hugh Grant, I have no interest in his or any other celebrity's life. The papers are full of this shit and the quicker it goes the better. Lets have proper journalist doing proper stories. I assume I must be in a minority though, judging by newspaper/ magazine sales.

It's whole new debate fella. I believe in a free press/media. Whenever a dictator comes to power the first thing they do is gag the media, there's a reason for that.

In the past they have proven they're sh1t at self regulation though so it's a toughie. I don't trust politicians generally 'cos most are self interest driven rather than being driven by belief.

Perhaps libel law should be looked at that seems to be stacked in favour of the powerful/influential rather than the just.

The news time generated over this is astonishing. If anything I'd have thought any right-wingers like Currie would be delighted anyway that this is all that what remains of the left has in it's locker, it's not like the charts is significant to anyone outside school age anyway and music has long ceased to be the political voice it once was.

You are right about the charts. My knowledge of chart music over the last 20 years or so is FA. In fact I have morphed into my dad. 'Turn that shite off. That's not music!'

It's telling that she is calling for something she would never have dared to when in office. How the basic freedoms we all should expect in any free society have been curtailed is a source of huge concern.

Personally I think they should play the dead kennedys 'kill the poor' at the funeral-a sentiment close to 'heart' - be fun, too, to see cameron and millband tapping their feet to that.
