Used FS Bikes

Just wondered what FS Mountain bikes you would recommend researching and looking at for picking up used on eBay, Gumtree etc? How much would you expect to pay for something at the lower end of the scale for FS that you would consider good and wouldn't compromise on spec wise or go any lower?

These places do vary enormously, especially on condition, and of course type of usage.

An easier way to approach this would be to ask: what is your budget, and where do you plan to ride?

+1. Just 'used FS bikes' is far to broad a category. As sonic says, 1/ where are you going to ride this bike? and 2/ what's your budget? - this will narrow it down a bit so people on here can point you in the right direction

The other thing I would say is that you ideally need to look at it and have a good nosey before you hand over any money. I did this when I bought a second hand FS bike last year, and it was a great purchase.

A mate of mine didn't go for a look at one first and paid someone who posted it to him. It was a right state when it turned up - luckily the guy refunded him and agreed to take it back, which was nice of him as he didn't have to. There is a level of risk that can be minimised by doing your research and going for a look first.

Hello. I will mostly be using it in the Peak District, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Pennines over rough terrain and long time periods.

I have seen this post on the forum from 2009 which has a few recommendations:

Giant Trance X5 and the GT ID5 XCR seem to have reasonably good reviews with 4 and 4½ stars from Bike Radar. Do you have any opinion on these bikes and any other recommendations? I will have to take a look at what price these are selling for used as I may be able to get one a lot cheaper (from new price) that is 3 or 4 years old, though will have to be wary of wear etc.

    TIA

for sure bargains to be had but you can also get stung.

I went through Gumtree coz at least you can search locally and actually go and see it. I picked up a boardman FS pro from a dude who bought it on that bike to work scheme. He had reflectors on the spokes... I brought a chain gauge to get an idea of wear.

Approx £350. As little as possible really. So not brand new or nearly new.

Looking at the setup of the rear fork on the Trance and the GT ID5 XCR5 the latter is almost horizontal and the former more vertical. Are they geared more toward different types of terrain? I'm particularly interested in what the horizontal fork does on the XCR5?

Not sure what you mean, but if you mean the angle of the shock, it's irrelevant in isolation. It's the design of the entire suspension system that makes a difference.

do well to get something in good nick for 350 I would have thought for a FS. At that kinda money I'd say you'd be look at replacing at least 100 quid of parts due to wear unless ur very lucky... Might be better going for a hardtail - more fun anyway :)

You might get lucky and pick up a giant Yukon, Paul's had the fx3 model (mechanical disc brakes and 24 speed) for just under 400.
