What headset do I have?

In a previous post, I asked for info on a headset problem for a friend. This led me to take a look at my own headset. I dissassembled my headset and ended up with these parts (pic below). After researching and reading up on all the different headset types, which was confusing to say the least, I am still not certain what type I have.

Also, would it be possible to swap out the caged bearings for cartridge bearings, and if so, which bits do I keep and which do I get rid of?

read the info on Parktools it covers all headsets

and from that picture you are missing part of the headset that would ID the type as the cups are still in the frame.

I was still uploading pics at the time.

All I required was a little personal advice as I had already looked online for information, but just don't understand the slight differences between the various headset types. If I referred to websites all the time, I wouldn't ask on here. After all, isn't that what a forum is for, to converse and ask and give advice? Pretty pointless this forum existing if not.

  • I've got a similar predicament on my ghost mountain bike. All I know is I've got a ritchey tapered headset and the bearings need replacing. Think a visit to my lbs is needed.

as can now be see it is a Zero stack/internal/semi integreated headset.

before it could have been either a ZS or a EC headset and as there was not all the info the best bet was for you to have a look at Parktools.

It is a pain in the 'arris, mate. If you have a Facebook account, I'd give GHOST a shout on there. In the past, they've been helpful.

Thank you for the informative reply :) I couldn't make out what was what via the Parktools site.

Yup, semi-integrated. Unless you can get the spec from the frame manufacturer / Ritchey , you'd really need to knock one of the cups from the frame and measure it to make sure you get the right one.

    Thanks, guys!

Yep, I thought I'd have that trouble, monty. Some components/replacements are easy to source, others not so. Shouldn't be too difficult to pop out though as opposed to a standard, traditional headset, right?

What is the component that is installed after the spacers? Some have said it is another shaped spacer, some say that it's an adjusting race?!?! Could I not just lose that? I've never seen one on any bike that I've previously owned before.

Wish I'd never looked at the damn thing now :)

    just as hard.

after the spacers come the stem. before the spacers tends to be the top cover.
which part in your picture are you thinking of?

    Great! Ha!

I'm referring to the part between the 2 x 5mm spacers and the Ritchey dust cap in the pic. Don't know if it's necessary or not. It sits underneath the 2 x 5mm spacers when fitted on the bike.

    LOL!

Yeah, I think that's gonna see the junk box. I wonder why they put that on the bike, instead of another standard spacer. I was thinking of cutting my steerer down so I won't miss the 'good' looking spacer :)

Last question. Is it possible to replace the caged bearings I have with cartridge bearings, and if so, how the hell would I go about getting the correct ones?

Thank you for your help today. Greatly appreciated, nick :!:

you just buy a new headset that does not come with that type of bearing.

tools will be needed to press out and in the new cups.

May be LBS time and then make a note of the markings on the bearings for ease of replacement later.

as they are just finger fit and removal jobs.

Haven't been to a LBS for a long time, I prefer to do the stuff myself but, I think you're right this time around.

    Thanks again, matey!

P.S The bike manufacturer just got back to me with this information regards the headset:
