I am looking for a hybrid bike for around £400
I would buy either new or second hand I don't mind but what would be best for my budget.
I Don't want a racer and would prefer the wider style 700c wheels (I'm a big lad).
I do currently have a bike I have been using but I have 2 weeks left before he needs it back.

I am currently on a hybrid Dawes bike. I don't know the model as its getting the rear wheel trued so I pick it back up tomorrow.
The commute is 7 miles each way. I am only commuting once a day atm but it will soon be twice a day (I am a chef) once its lighter on a night.
There is a lot of hills on the commute but it is all roads.
The reason I have not said a racer type bike is purely because of my size 6ft4 22 stone.
The reason I have started to use a bike is to get more active. I don't care for losing weight or anything even though I am big I just want to be able to keep up with the kids. Also Its because of the price of petrol and servicing on my car (Octavia VRS). Now I will save £100 a month on petrol alone for just cycling the morning shift and driving the night shift.
Edit: My location is Teesside if that makes a difference in what bike I can get for the money.0 -
I have 2 male friends who have Pinnacle hybrids from Evans and are very pleased with them. One uses his for commuting and the other for general riding about. They were

The specialized Sirrus also gets some good reviews.0 -
This is the bike I am currently using is a Dawes Discovery 501 (older model with disc brakes).
I picked it back up from the bike shop today and asked them what they think I should buy and they showed this http://www.bikescene.co.uk/Specialized- ... -34-0.html However I did explain that it would never go off road so would this be a good choice.
I know this is £100 over my budget but they offer 0% finance so I would pay the £400 then £100 next month.
One thing I did forget to mention is I would love Disc brakes as the hills are very steep on my commute and I would miss the confidence in bad weather.0 -

If your never going to go off road with it, then I wouldn't choose that one the shop recommended. I think a rigid fork is the way to go for a commuter because they are lighter and you wont get any bobbing about. Th boardman above is also nice.0

Hi cupra.
I have a 2012 Cannondale quick 4 with spd shimano 520's fitted and specialized armadillos with less than 100 mile in them.
Yours for £400

I've been using last year's model of one of these for a year now & it seems bullet proof.

8 gears may not seem a lot but it has all the useful gears that the 24 speed bike I had before offered. The couriers seem a well liked & well reviewed range.________________________

Since your almost local check out Low Fell Cycles (I had some work done there lately) they had some decent looking 2nd hand Hybrids.

The Giant escape looked in good condition.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -
Thank you very much for the replies.
The problem is finding a rigid front fork with disk brakes with good other components for the money I have.
If it makes a difference I would go over budget by £100 ish.
Thanks for the second hand offers too but in all honesty for me to go second hand I would want to be saving 25% on new and it still be in pristine condition.0 -

What about this

It is "rover" looking but still.0 -
oxoman wrote:Boardman is a good bike, only downside is the retailer. Not renowned for bike assembly skills at some shops. Bike is ok service is not. Evans stock BMC, Norco, Specialised, Pinnacle to name but a few in your revised price range, would steer clear of suspension as not really required.
I am savvy in building bikes its just been a little while. I wouldn't take the bike built as my friend got a carerra subway from there and the wheel fell off on his way to work, Also the gears were set up wrong and I had to go sort it out for him.0 -
After riding 6-7 bikes including the ones in this thread the one that was genuinely most comfortable was the one I said I didn't want.
So I've already put 20 miles on it (and I could only manage around 5 on the dawes discovery 501)
