Seen a few rides with this on. Is it more a fashion or does it have a job?
Keeping head warm or sun out? As think you would need a bigger peak? Plus in summer sure you would be hot with helmet on aswell!!

Cycling cap under a helmet?
If so they have a smaller peak as if any longer would/could obscure road view when you have your head down. I wear mine in colder weather to keep my head warm & are quite good in rain conditions too.
Pretty old school really (compared to skull caps) but are cheap to buy, pack up small if you want to take off part way through a ride, as most are cotton they are easy to keep clean too & for the fashionista they come in lots of different colour options and team colours.Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.0 -
Had mine today, Kept it warm and also kept the sweat out of my eyes, I used to have problems with sweat dripping but not anymore. Will always wear mine under the helmet now. Great investment.Scott Speedster S20 Roadie for Speed

My cap is part of the wet weather gear as I now wear a proper helmet without a peak and the rain drips off into my eyes without a cap.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Thanks, I don't think I could wear one in the summer would get to hot!! Just wondered what the fuss was all about. Might look at one for next winter but not summer!!0

Is there a fuss about? Is everyone making a fuss about cycling caps and not telling me?! This is so unfair!Faster than a tent.......0 -
I wear one as I don't like the inevitable tan lines on my forehead from the vents in my helmet.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

Seems to be more and more cyclists around this area iv seen wearing them. That's all!0 -
A few benefits: Keeps rain out of the eyes like a visor (without rule breaking); shades out the sun but you can pop the peak up and out of the way if you're in the drops and don't want it to obscure the road; sunburn; cold and when you get to the cafe and take your helmet off, you don't have to worry about sweaty helmet hair.0
-
They're quite functional as described above but unless you're going to a Carter USM gig take them off when not on the bike0

Nice reference to the rules and adhering to them. Chapeau.I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but I'm intercontinental when I eat French toast...0 -

'Chapeau' indeed.0 -
Permanent loss of any chapeaus for even mentioning the rules!Faster than a tent.......0

Indeed. I'm pretty sure that no-one that has ever had 'chapeau' said to them deservingly has even heard of the velominati or the rules, though.0 -

Surely it would be an Abdoujaparov gig nowadays, which is even more appropriate0 -
Rules are for sad people who like to be sheep and think the internet means truth.
Caps were old school, but are now priced at substantially inflated margins and sold to coffee drinking, homoerotic men with large moustaches and a penchant for the cosmopolitan.
Or, worn by scrawny blokes who think it makes them look pro. The pro's get them for free, and wear them for money!0 -

My cap cost me £6. Cycling caps are very popular up here in rural Yorkshire, particularly amongst older riders who frequently wear them without helmets. The only moustaches to be seen are accompanied by large Audax style beards.0 -

So guys are just quietly cycling around wearing caps then?
Seems to me that you are the only person making a fuss
They could be tw4ts thinking they look good, or maybe they have just heard/found that there are benefits to wearing one (under a helmet).
Either way at least they are out cycling and not just making negative posts on a cycling website! Even when you got shot down re them being useful in cold/rain you then just went on to moan about them for summer use!!0 -

I only asked what the benefits of wearing one was that's all. Not making a fuss as not complained about them at all!!
I'm pretty sure I was out cycling when I see them wearing them, if I was just making negative posts why are you replying to my posts? There are plenty of other threads to read, I'm pretty new to cycling and to this forum and now I see why people just read and don't say anything!0 -
Did not mean to imply that you do not go out cycling.
I felt that you seemed to be quite opinionated (in a negetive way) rather than just interested in finding out more about caps, but apologies if that's not the case
The reason I replied is that IMO the main problem with this forum is people passing negative judgement on fairly ordinary cycling things. A cap may not be ordinary but it is still just an item that some people find useful.0 -

I even said ill get one for the winter but won't wear it in summer as ill get to hot. I agree sometimes it is like that. I am always interested in things cycling so if it came across that way then my bad!0 -

I prefer not to mention them at all; bad jokes tend to go away when people stop telling them.
As for caps, they needn't be expensive; even my nice Walz ones didn't cost much at all.0 -

O.K. Cap came today  . Its a Castelli one and was on offer so I thought I should try.
I look a tit in it but get the feeling I would like wearing it when cycling if conditions call for it.
It's half 'Pope' half 'Village People' without a helmet (not that I would let anyone see me wearing it without a helmet!), and a bit 'Mario Kart' with helmet on
Maybe it will look better when in full lycra0 -
If it was good enough for Eddy Merckx, Fausto Coppi, Roger de Vlaeminck etc I'm sure it will be good enough for you.0
-
But I don't think any of those guys ride in my club?
Maybe they are in the fast group and I have just never seen them ;-)0 -
They also appear to be good for shootin hoops. as I recall Wesley Snipes had a nice collection in 'White Men Can't Jump'. Try telling him they aint cool.0

I like wearing a cap under my helmet, in all but the warmest conditions. I buy Campagnolo ones from a lovely old guy at Ripley Bike Jumble Sales whenever they are on, about 3-4 times a year - they cost a fiver each. Main benefits have been mentioned many times above. If you like wearing one, great - if not, great. I think it's called 'personal choice'.Raymondo
