Crashed helmet - need a new one?

I suspect I know the correct answer but thought I'd ask what you folks would actually do...

Recently I had my first 'crash'. Wasn't anything major but I basically went over the handlebars at 14mph and took more or less the whole impact on my forehead (still recovering from the minor concussion hence not on the bike now in this beautiful weather :().

The point at the front of the helmet took the impact and is now slightly dented and mis-shaped:

So, would I be stupid to continue using this helmet and/or can I use it as an excuse to get something that isn't fake carbon fibre look (if I'd known I wouldn't have bought it!)?

Get a new one. Helmets are just like carbon - their entire structure can be damaged even though they look ok. If you have another crash on that one it won't do it job.

I have no idea what's going on here.

Thanks chaps, I figured that would be the response :)

The helmet is a Kask K50 which I got from CRC so I'll enquire about a crash replacement.

But what about the seedlings? I think they may need more light.

Ha ha, yes - I keep telling her that! Problem being that we are in a terrace where windows face east/west - not the best for these things. Some white netting or something to reflect from the inside would work but gardening ain't my hobby :D

The garden's not really big enough for a greenhouse but today I built a cold frame so hopefully that'll help...

Anyway, it looks as though Kask don't do crash replacements so I'll probably get a Giro next (I have one of their MTB helmets I could use in the meantime).

Kask do have a replacement policy I do believe so you should be ok with them...

How did you go over your bars at 14mph? Hope you are feeling better now.

Going down a curb standing up on the hoods and the STIs sliped down with the effect of slamming on the brakes - given my weight was already high and forwards there was no stopping me going face first into the road

I can't find any reference to a Kask replacement service anywhere but given I got it for £36 in the sales I doubt any replacement service would match that (if the Giro one is anything to go by).

20% of retail irrc. And since the OP, I guess, only paid £37 for an £80 helmet anyway (that's how much I paid for my identical, dent aside, K50) I doubt that the replacement policy is going to help much. When I bent my Mojito (or rather had it bent for me) I worked out I could have got the replacement for £96 if I sent the original back and waited a while, or just bought it for £100 at discount keeping the old lid with the almost new pads and straps as spares.

The carbon is a bit cheesy but it just looks grey at distance and it's still very good. I'd pay £80 for it but I still prefer the Mojito though there isn't so much in it.

    ^^^this

when i cracked my giro ionos helmet i checked the crash replacement policy, but even with the discount it wasn't as cheap as simply buying a new helmet online (same model), let alone the hassle and cost of sending the old one back, then waiting for the replacement
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Everything I needed to hear. Replace and glad the concussion is the only thing you mention. Hopefully with a few days off you'll be back to 100%.

My head has been saved twice now by Giro Atmos lids. The most recent incident only 7 days ago, I came off quite bad though as a van driver decided to pull out in front of me from a junction. Ive had to have emergency hip surgery to have my femur bolted back together :(

It is absolutely vital that you get a new lid mate. They are not designed to take a second crash!

Sorry to hear that Mick, where was the accident? Hope you heal quickly
  • Happened in Hullbridge on BH Monday. They have said there's a 40% chance the ball joint wont fuse back onto the femur and if that happens I'll need a hip replacement.

Won't be able to tell for at least 6-8 weeks as I cannot put any weight on it. Fingers crossed it'll work out ok but I won't be back on the bike for at least 12 months and won't be able to do my job either.

I had a few good rides booked for this year too. Gutted doesn't begin to describe it.

If I wasn't wearing a lid though, could have been worse.

Sounds like a biggy mate, not at the bottom of Coventry Hill was it?
  • It was right outside the bike shop. I was going down the hill at the time towards the roundabout, looked to give way to the right which was clear and proceeded to cross but he pulled straight out from my left into my path without properly looking.
I smashed into his van at a fair ol pace!
