Orange Five or Giant Anthem?

So the Ducati toy has been moved on to new ownership as I've simply lost interest in powered two wheels for various reasons and I now have a space in the toy shed for a full sus mtb; finally!
I currently have a Carerra Vulcan hardtail that I've personalised to my liking and this will be kept for really mucky winter rides. I've always hankered after an Orange 5 as I like the simplicity/chunkiness of the design but I'm also taken by the Giant Anthem too. It will be a carefully selected second hand purchase, budget circa £800ish....which might be a bit light for a nice Five?
Which is the better bike for my needs/budget?
Currently I ride mostly cycle centre singletrack but do explore off the main trails and I'd like to eventually progress into doing all day rides perhaps with a club or with some friends who are keen mtb'ers.
What size to buy? I'm 5ft 9 with a 31" inside leg. My Vulcans a 16 or 17 so I'm planning on buying a small/16 or 17 in either the Orange or the Giant. There seems to be lots of medium/18" around but I think the top tube is a bit long for my build.
Any thoughts, pointer, comments appreciated.

One bike is chalk, the other cheese: totally different bikes! As are the sizes, top tubes vary a lot for a given size.
Sound like the Anthem is more suited to you though.0 -
In what way are they so different? I've always ridden hard tails so full sus is a bit of a minefield to me. I've read lots about trail bikes, enduro bikes, 100mm travel, 130,, travel but other than out and out dh bikes I'm struggling to spot the real difference!
Why is the Anthem more suitable for me?
Thanks for response.

Have you looked at geometry? One is a XC bike with steepish angles and 100mm of travel, the other a much slacker, much longer travel bike that weighs a hell of a lot more designed for much harder riding. Massive difference.
For trail riding, and what you describe, the lighter Anthem sounds ideal, unless you start hooning off jumps and stuff. The light weight will be good for longer rides, with an efficent suspension system.0 -
Ahhh so the Five is more down hill/big hit focussed beast and total overkill for what I'm doing and planning to do. I get a little air but not the full face helemt and body armour sort!! At 44 I take too long to heal these days!
I'll re-focus my attention on Anthems as I also think I'll get more for my budget too...and its much better suited to my needs it seems. Hopefully I can find one near enough to go have a try for size.
Thanks for setting me on the right trail.....
