I am posting this because i want to know what exactly are the differences in derailleurs. The costs go up drastically as you buy better ones but what exactly is better about them. I had a Trek 4300 for 3 years with an Alivio and now i have a Fuji 1.3 with a Deore. Help please.

More expensive ones weigh a little less, have better quality jockey wheels and pivots and (all else being equal) may shift very marginally better (diminishing returns on that one).

you also have the short and long cage versions depending on how many chain rings you run upfront on your bike etc

Plus dampered (Shimano plus, SRAM type2) on the latest ones to resist chain slap.
