Cheap All-mountain bike

My son's managed to get his bike stolen and bank of dad is going to help him out with a cheap replacement. I'm looking for a all-mountain bike around the £1400 mark; something that will take a few big hits, but will still be capable going uphill well. I don't mind going for an older model if anyone can reccommend anything on sale right now.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Have a look at canyon bikes good price and spec0

as above full sus or ht
you can buy last season bike at less cost than the brand new version
and I would budget £1100 or so and spend the rest on a new helmet and a good bike lock0 -
Hi,
Thanks for the replys. Definitely looking at full suspension. This one looks a decent bike for the price, but they only have it in XL. I've looked eksewhere, but can't find a medium anywhere. If anyone knows different, or can suggest a similar bike, I'd appreciate it.

He's got all the kit, so no need to budget for that.0 -
That Commencal is only available in XL from what I can see, don't know anywhere else selling them. The spec isn't amazing either, but its alright.
I'd seriously look at Canyon's AL+, and maybe have a look at Paul's Cycles too, they normally have some bargains.0 -
What sort of bike are you replacing? If you are happy with 140mm then chain reactions' escarpe 2 might be worth a look.
At 160mm maybe the Saracen Ariel 161?0 -
Saracen Arial 160 is very good. Canyon, Rose & YT Industries also do some very good value all mountain bikes.
Also worth having a look at Decathlon, I'm sure they do a all mountain bike which is extremely good value.
Or there's this:

A little over budget but really good for the money and pretty much indestructible but reasonably good weight.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Trail fun - Transition Bandit
Road - Wilier Izoard Centaur/Cube Agree C62 Disc
Allround - Cotic Solaris0 -
I thought Decathlon did an AM bike as well. That thing is a bit of a lump to pedal up hillsTransition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

There's the FR6 which is a low end version of the above with a different frame and 160mm forks, sub 700 quid and probably harder to pedal.0

That Canyon isn't a all mountain bike and those Torque frames aren't particularly nice. I rode a Torque FRX and was surprised at just how average it felt even with all it's top spec components. The Scott Genius is much better and is actually an all mountain bike.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

as above really. canyon nerve AL+ fits the bill. just a tad over 1500. if you could up your budget the strive is a bit more of a big hitter - lets be honest, teenagers always try stupid sh*t.
the cheapest one is 2k though. if your budget is really rigid i would consider second hand. if you wait a while there is some bargains that can be found, from the type of person who bought thinking they would need the travel then decided two weeks later they wanted a XC bike. could look at a giant reign or trek remedy's then. this was my plan but i decided to just bankrupt myself and get a new bike. no regrets at all
also i would agree the torque will be to much to pedal.0 -
Giant Reigns are really good, they take a beating but still climb really well.
Remedy's are more of an XC/trail bike, not so good when you start getting really aggressive with it.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
