iPad log-in problems

Don't know if this has been raised and I couldn't find it under the search thing...
Go to this site on an iPad, decide to reply to a post and the log-in applet pops up, as expected. That applet gives all the impression that it's doing a whole multitude of things behind the scenes, one of which may be the log-in. The keypad response times are on the floor so even typing C i b takes a while, as does entering the password. Worse though is if I get the password wrong and have to backspace it locks up the applet and the browser (Safari). This is on a decent and fast wireless internet connection, and is the only time I ever see an issue on this or other sites.
Is this is a known issue? What's actually happening when I type into the two textboxes on the login pane? Can the background kerfuffle be switched off or reduced?
