Apologies if this has been said before but can someone tell a newbie what is the purpose of bibs.

I currently wear a pair of 3/4 length shorts,a cycle shirt and jacket to keep out the cold,so what are bibs for.Sorry if this seems a numpty question.

    Asked a thousand times ....

    Briefly

Less chance of cold back (if top were to ride up)
No tight waistband when crouched over
IMHO keeps things in place more efficiently including pad)
Gives the G/F a good laugh when walking around without cycling top on.

    Highly recommended.

  • ever noticed when you are out on the bike that your jersey/jacket will ride up a little while your shorts go the other way - exposing a cold bit of back!!!! bib shorts sorts that, also ensures better more consistent fit
first time you put them on you feel a bit of a tw*t and it doesnt look too good but once you see the benefits of cycling in them, much like clipless pedals, you wont go back
    take the plunge!

Yeah, I had visions when I got my first bibs of looking like Freddy Mercury in his leotard days.

As it turned out it was much more like WWF wrestling that Freddy!

Padded bib tights... Make no sense at all anywhere else other than on the bike when they make all the sense in the world...

Before we had bib tights and shorts, we used clip-on braces to hold them up and try and get some cover for your lower back. Can't remember whether it was Castelli or Assos who came up with one-piece bibs first, but never looked back since.
