Hi guys/girls,
Let's kick things off then...I'm a noob in terms of bike parts, love riding them just never been in to fixing them.
I'm after some advice really...I need a new rear derailleur for my bike (got broke whilst in transit from Germany) I believe the current is Shimano Acera, first problem is it a "long cage"? Also I'm a believer in upgrading not replacing so is there anything better? Not looking at spending a fortune tho..
Thanks for the help.

stick with shimano, not sram that way you don't need to replace your shifters and stick with same mech length to fit you cogs! slx xt or xtr whatever you budget is? slx is a great mech.
try having a look on chainreactioncycles.com0 -
Any same make, similar speed (7,8 or 9 are the same). Probably long cage - mechs have a range (will be in the ad/tech docs). Range is big minus small chainring plus big minus small cog.I don't do smileys.

Okay think I get what you mean..
Just had a look at specs of my RD which I believe is this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=38673
So from the specs of that I'm assuming this will work on my bike http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=28033 from reading the reviews this seems like a good buy?
Any thoughts?

Yup that will do it, if you have 8 speed the shorter cage will work fine on yours.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Personally I would go for
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=30990
As the Acera is 7/8 speed, as is this one.0 -

same question to you really. would you class this as an upgrade?0 -
They both work as well as each other really, the Alivio is 'higher' in the range. But you won't feel the difference.0
-
suppose for that price it don't really matter. thanks for the help guys!0

The hierachy is Acera, Altus, Alivio, Deore, SLX, XT. Disregarding the really expensive and specialised ones, so both are a step, or two up.
Whether you'll notice any difference is debatable.I don't do smileys.

cheers again guys im going for the Altus.
does anybody know the size seat clamp needed? I want a QR.
cheers!0 -
Seat clamp size applies to front derailleur, not rear.
Rear fitting is essentially universal.0 -
sorry should have been clear this isn't related to the RD, I was wondering what size the seat post is so I can buy a QR seat post clamp.

appreciated dude0 -
I wouldn't go for the Altus, it's a step down from the one you have, Deore would have been a better choice.

That or find a good used one as my XT 9 speed cost less than that.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
