Help

I am a resident of Switzerland. Travel insurance does not cover luggage and therefore checked in bikes. Travelling Friday. Does anyone know of cheap solution. Only option at the moment is nearly £500 to extent home insurance and then also have to pay for travel insurance on top of this.

Stupid thing is my current insurance covers my bike up until the point of giving it to the check in staff. When it comes off the plane and I get it back I'm covered even if I crash it and break it....

Frustrated...

Travel insurance does (or can) cover baggage.

    You would think so...

Just not in Switzerland if you are a Swiss resident.

It's additional cover on top of normal travel insurance. Even that bag of clothes you check in worth nothing is not covered without the addtional "baggage" insurance.

Spent two days trawling the web and ringing companies

    Hoping someone here can help...

So take the extra cover. I don't see the problem.

So there's two options, 1) extending home insurance as above; and 2) additional baggage insurance on your travel insurance?

And you're saying that option 2 is more expensive than £500? That doesn't sound right. Even option 1 seems ludicrous.

Yep. I agree. Welcome to Switzerland. Low tax but that means most things cost twice as much therefore negating the fact that it's low tax....

You actually can just take out baggage insurance without the travel insurance. Hoever the bagage insurance is per trip...And close on CHF150 per trip. Hence taking an extension on my Home conents which basically covers anything up to a certain amount wherever I am. I could not afford the price of all my bikes but at least if one does go missing I can almost afford to repace it.

So theres three options. 1) extending home insurance as above; 2) additional baggage insurance on your travel insurance; and 3) just taking out baggage insurance.

    The plot thickens.

I'm going to whack in a 4th option, just for the hell of it:

    4) Get a badass hard shell bike case, and stick two fingers up to insurance. How often do bikes get damaged in between check in/baggage claim anyway? Let alone ones with a badass hard shell bike case.

Of course, this is all assuming that hiring a bike at your chosen destination is not an option.

    Hang on... option 5...

    5) Hire a bike at your chosen destination.

    4) not an option. Airline/airport looses bag it's not covered...Or if it is only up to a cetian amount. Have a decent case allready.
    5) It's never the same riding someone elses bike...
