Galaxy S3 as Cycle Computer (Cadence?)

So I am going to start using my S3 as a cycle computer and wanted to know if anybody here has had success connecting a Bluetooth 4.0 cadence/speed sensor?

My understanding is that at the moment BT 4.0 isn't working properly on Android because it lacks the libraries or something but was hoping somebody could prove me wrong!

If not, how have you found the speedometer via GPS compared to the normal wheel based speed sensor on a basic computer?

Any app recommendations? Looking at IpBike at the moment.

Can't help with your question, but have one of my own. What case/mount do you have? I've been looking for one for a while

The waterproof case and extended battery skin are en route so I'll pass judgement once I've used them.

  • No way to make BTLE / BlueTooth Smart work with the curtent Android in a device independent manner. It may be possible to get something going with a lot of work for a specific phone but I have not seen a lot of apps do even this yet. The issue is really Googles they need to provide an API for developers and the driver interface for handset makers to target. I hope things will get sorted with 5.0 which will probobly come out mid May but that may not be of any use to you unless your S3 gets an upgrade with the nessasary support.

For now your best bet is a USB ANT stick and an OPG cable as detailed here.

I plan to add suppoprt into IpBikeas soon as I can once Google get there act together.

Thanks for your reply Ifor. I think I'm probably going to hold off the ANT+ solution as I'll almost certainly want to ditch it as soon as BT 4.0 is up and running (hopefully) in Android 5.0. It's quite frustrating that the hardware is ahead of the software support, well, unless developers spend time making very device specific apps which probably isn't a great business model.

You may have already seen this but there is an app out there that can demonstrate that BT4.0 devices can connect to an S3 but its only a demo. https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... eapp&hl=en

Got that info from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=2042588
